Distracted driving is a big problem in the Atlanta, Georgia area. It can put everyone on the road at risk and lead to accidents that result in serious injuries and even deaths. The state is pushing for stronger laws against distracted driving. There are also other ways the problem can be stopped.
What is distracted driving?
Distracted driving is any activity that takes a driver’s attention off the road and the task of driving. It’s a dangerous practice that many drivers engage in out of habit that can lead to motor vehicle accidents. While many people automatically associate distracted driving with using a handheld cell phone to talk or text, it includes many more activities. A driver’s attention can easily be distracted when they are eating, fiddling with the car’s controls, having a conversation with a passenger, and even while daydreaming.
Distraction from using a cell phone, especially texting, is particularly dangerous. If the driver takes their eyes off the road even for five seconds, it can result in a devastating accident. The faster the vehicle’s speed, the worse the outcome of the accident as well.
What are the distracted driving laws in Georgia?
Georgia’s distracted driving law is in place to protect everyone on the road by reducing the risk of motor vehicle accidents caused by certain habits. It is against the law to use a cell phone or any other electronic device while driving. Drivers are only permitted to use their cell phones in a hands-free manner. They can use the car’s infotainment system or an earpiece to have a phone conversation.
There are a few exceptions to the distracted driving law, however. They include the following:
• Using a handheld cell phone to contact 911 in an emergency or to report a crime or to report a road accident or hazards on the road.
• Official utility workers or contractors responding to an emergency.
• Police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders doing their jobs.
A person who is sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle is also exempt from the restrictions.
Distracted driving can have deadly consequences. When you take the time to avoid distractions when behind the wheel, it can keep you and others safer.
